Those of you who have been following this blog for some time may remember this post, this one, and maybe even this one...so, you'll recall that we had this "scare" with "Little Man" just a few short months ago.
Fast forward to yesterday, Saturday. We decided to head to the Twin Cities early in the day, do some shopping, take the kids to the Minnesota Zoo, grab a bite to eat, and even stop in Lakeville to visit family. It had all the makings of any "normal" Saturday...until...
We were in the bookstore shopping. The kids were sitting kiddie-corner from me looking through children's books, talking to one another, and simply enjoying the day. They were both in my line of sight -- as they always are.
It was then that I turned to put several books back on the shelf and grab some different ones. Not a moment later, "Feisty Girl" is tugging at the leg of my pants. "Momma, candy," she said. I glanced down to see her holding what appeared to be a bright pink pill in her hand. I grabbed it. I glanced at it. It had all the "markings" of some sort of pill. Where had she found it? What was it? Were there more? Had she eaten some?
Oh my....there are soooo many pills out there. Some that would cause her little-to-know harm. Others that could drop-her-dead in minutes. I was in a semi-panic mode. My husband happened to walk by the isle we were in. I asked for his help as I dialed our local clinic. They were of no help, none. They didn't even have an RN on staff -- WHAT?
Okay - what next? I called the Poison Control Center. They sprang into action! How old was my daughter? When did she swallow the pill? How much did she weigh? What did the pill look like? What markings did it have on it? What color was it? Did I know, for sure, that she swallowed one...or more? Was there anything in her teeth that would help me determine whether she had ate some? These guys were GOOD!
To not keep you in suspense any longer -- "Feisty Girl" managed to find a 25 mg tablet of adult Benadryl somewhere while we were shopping. We were told that she would probably be just fine as long as she hadn't ingested 3 or more of the pills. If she had ingested 3 or more, we would likely start seeing symptoms within the hour and should then take her to the nearest emergency room for treatment.
Praise the Lord, again! We made it to the one hour mark, the two hour mark, the three hour mark...and everything was just fine.
You know that old saying "you can't turn your back for even one moment." It's true. Very true. Never in a million years would I have expected to turn around to return some books to a shelf only to turn back and find my daughter with someone else's medication in her hand (and possibly, in her mouth). When I think about what could have happened it sends shivers down my spine. Thankfully, things turned out just fine.
