It appears, in an effort to convince tourists that Japan is still a safe place to visit after the devasting earthquake and tsunami earlier this year, that the Japan Tourism Agency is going to be giving away approximately 10,000 round trip tickets to Japan next year.
And what do you have to do to snag one of these free tickets? According to the agency the only real catch will be that you must "publicize [their] trip on blogs and social media sites." Travelers would, however, be required to pay for their own lodging and meals...and before any of this can actually move forward the proposal must still be approved by Japanese lawmakers. The agency is hopeful that it will be able to start signing people up as early as next April to receive the free tickets.
So...who's in?
We visited Japan, very briefly, in July of 2008 on our way to be united with our adoptive daughter in Beijing, China. So briefly, in fact, that the extent of our experience did not make it beyond the walls of the Narita Internationl Airport in Tokyo! We have fond memories of our brief experience/stint in Japan -- the people were friendly, the food was good, the airport was clean and felt safe, their had a very nice children's play area, and the staff at that airport can herd folks through the deboarding and boarding process like nobody's business...they were amazingly efficient.
I would go back in a heartbeat -- I wonder if those are 10,000 individual tickets? I couldn't go without my family! ;)
