Days 8 and 9 of the Chinese New Year have both nearly come and gone, and Day 10 will arrive soon.
Day 8 is the eve of the birth of the Jade Emperor. A family dinner celebration is generally held to celebrate the impending birth of the Emperor. Anyone who has not already returned to work will return on this day. Business celebrate by hosting lunches or dinners with their employees, who are thanked for the work that they did in the passing year. Additionally, all government agencies will also stop celebrating on the eighth day and those workers will also return to work.
Day 9 (today) is the birthday of the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor is said to be the ruler of Heaven and all "realms of existence below," including Man and Hell. This is according to a version of Taoist mythology. He is said to be one of the most important gods. Many Chinese offer prayers to the Jade Emperor on this day.
Day 10 brings continued celebration of the birth of the Jade Emperor.
